National symbols

The Flag:

The flag waved for the first time in 1850, when a group of insurrectionists took the arms against the Spanish colonial power.

The three blue color stripes represent the different departments in which it was divided the country. The white stripes evoke the purity of the will of independence of the people. The triangle symbolizes the freedom, the equality and the fraternity. The red color is a reflection of the blood shed in search of the independence, while the star symbolizes the sovereignty.

Coat of Arms:

The coat of arms has the figure of a heart-shaped ogive. It superior part contains a golden rod key that symbolizes the strategic position that Cuba occupies geographically between the two Americas . The raising sun represents the emergence of a new nation. Three blue stripes, separated by two white, represent the number of departments that composed the colonial Cuba . The real palm represents the nobility and the purity of the Cuban people

The National Hymn:

The music of the national hymn was composed by Perucho Figueredo in 1867. One year later, in 1868, when the troops of insurrectionists seized the city of Bayamo, located in the oriental region of the country, he wrote the following verses:

"Charge to combat, bayameses, Proudly our motherland watches you Do not fear a glorious death Because to die for our country is to live To live chained, is to live Under affront and opprobium submitted Let us listen the bugle blow To arms, braves, charge ! "

The National Flower:

The national flower is a sort of endemic jasmine: the "Mariposa Blanca”(White Butterfly). It was used by Cuban women during the Independence war to transmit messages to the battle field and it symbolizes the purity and the independence.

The"Mariposa Blanca" grows in such humid places such as river banks and lake shores. It is also cultivated in house gardens.

The National bird :

The national bird is kind of an autochthonous bird belonging to the Quetzal family: the "Tocororo" (Priotelus temnurus). It reproduces on its plumage the colors of the Cuban flag: blue, white and red .

The National Tree:

Although the real palm is not a species native from Cuba , it is the national tree because it is omnipresent in all the plains and mountains of the country. It can resist the most violent winds without being broken, that's why it symbolizes the courage of the Cuban people.
